The Batmobile
Without question, one of the most famous cars ever to appear on paper or on screen is the Batmobile. There have been various incarnations of the car over the years but possibly the most noteworthy and discussed in the car which featured in the Christopher Nolan film, the Dark Knight. The inspiration for the Batmobile used in the film came from Frank Miller’s Batman and had a machine-like appearance, rather than sleeker models which had been featured in previous films. The first vehicle which can carry large amounts of passengers was built in Wisconsin in the United States in 1871.
This vehicle was invented by Dr. J.W. Carhart who entered a competition run by the state to make a vehicle that could transport people and was not powered by a horse, as had traditionally been the case, and they also stipulated that it must be able to travel at over 5 miles per hour.
This invention led to the first ever car race in the world which took place on 16 July 1878 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Seven cars entered the race but only two could start and in the end, the winner was an entry from Oshkosh which took over 3 hours to complete the 323-km journey.
By the nearing of the turn of the century in 1899, 30 different and independent American companies made 2,500 a year. An incredibly small number by today’s standards but it was considered a huge achievement at the time. In the coming decades over 400 different American companies would enter the market to try and get a piece of the pie which everybody wanted. It was very clear, even from this early stage that cars were going to be the next big thing that changed the world, just like the industrial revolution had dined over 100 years before.
This competition would start a kind of proxy war between the United States and Europe who both wanted to be leaders in the industry. Both would succeed in their own way but it would be the United States who eventually would bring cars to the masses over the coming decades.
The Brass Era
The first major period in automobile history is known as the Brass or Edwardian period. The former refers to the amount of brass used in the cars and the latter refers to the king of England at the time. Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was created by the author Ian Flemming, from the book of the same name. Flemming also wrote the James Bond novels. Fleming said that his inspiration for the car was the racing cars by Count Louis Zborowski in the 1920s. The name of the car derived from the spluttering sound made by the engine of the car.
Six different versions of the car were made for the film which went into production in 1967. The car was designed by the producer and many artists who all took inspiration from the classic novel. The engine used in the car was a Ford 3000 V6. Dick Van Dyke who starred in the movie has been noted as saying that the car was very difficult to drive and was made for its aesthetic beauty rather than its drivability. One roadworthy version of the car which was made for the film only appeared in the movie for six seconds.
All of the cars have since been sold to private owners, some are on display at museums around the world, while others are not able to be seen by the public. Due to the popularity of the film and its prominence in popular culture, many replicas of the car have been produced over the years.
Special versions of the car were built for both the US and UK stage productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 is a car made by the British car firm Aston Martin and designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera.
