Without question, one of the most famous cars ever to appear on paper or on screen is the Batmobile. Cars were invented much earlier than most people think the first cars were invented in Europe, in France and Germany in the 1800s. Though it was America who popularised mass car production the businessman Henry Ford, the people first responsible for inventing the car are Gottlieb Daimler, Karl Benz, Nicolaus Otto and Emile Levassor. These early cars did not run on petrol or diesel as cars do today, instead, the first internal combustible engines were powered by hydrogen.
Many of these first cars came comp
lete with a chimney where they would release clouds of smoke which had been produced in the combustible engines, much like the exhaust pipe in cars today, except they were much less clean and evidently not great for the environment. The first vehicle which can carry large amounts of passengers was built in Wisconsin in the United States in 1871.
This vehicle was invented by Dr. J.W. Carhart who entered a competition run by the state to make a vehicle that could transport people and was not powered by a horse, as had traditionally been the case, and they also stipulated that it must be able to travel at over 5 miles per hour.
This invention led to the first ever car race in the world which took place on 16 July 1878 in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Seven cars entered the race but only two could start and in the end, the winner was an entry from Oshkosh which took o
ver 3 hours to complete the 323-km journey.
By the nearing of the turn of the century in 1899, 30 different and independent American companies made 2,500 a year. An incredibly small number by today’s standards but it was considered a huge achievement at the time. In the coming decades over 400 different American companies would enter the market to try and get a piece of the pie which everybody wanted. It was very clear, even from this early stage that cars were going to be the next big thing that changed the world, just like the industrial revolution had dined over 100 years before.
This competition would start a kind of proxy war between the United States and Europe who both wanted to be leaders in the industry. Both would succeed in their own way but it would be the United States who eventually would bring cars to the masses over the coming decades.
The first major period in automobile history is known as the Brass or Edwardian period. The former refers to the amount of brass used in the cars and the latter refers to the king of England at the time. Just as is the case today, Japan was also making headway into the market and produced some of the best cars of the brass or Edwardian era. The Hatsudoki Seizo Co. Ltd began to produce its own models and sell them to the Asian market. It was now that the Ford company in American began to make a name for itself too.
Despite the rapid growth and demand in the car market, the industry was to be shattered and halted for several years. The First World War effectively stopped all other activity that wasn’t related to warfare. Though interestingly, cars themselves played a role in the war in a way which has never been seen before. Soldiers could transport troops, food and ammunition in a much easier manner than had previously been the case. This was the first major conflict to incorporate such transport and it would revolutionize all battles to come.

Originally the name was not supposed to be Toyota. The family name from which the company derives is actually Toyoda, but it was changed to Toyota to reach a wider market. The company has a surprisingly relaxed approach to marketing and has no special branding which has led to inconsistencies in its campaigns across the globe.
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang was created by the author Ian Flemming, from the book of the same name. Flemming also wrote the James Bond novels. Fleming said that his inspiration for the car was the racing cars by Count Louis Zborowski in the 1920s. The name of the car derived from the spluttering sound made by the engine of the car.
Six different versions of the car were made for the film which went into production in 1967. The car was designed by the producer and many artists who all took inspiration from the classic novel. The engine used in the car was a Ford 3000 V6. Dick Van Dyke who starred in the movie has been noted as saying that the car was very difficult to drive and was made for its aesthetic beauty rather than its drivability. One roadworthy version of the car wh
ich was made for the film only appeared in the movie for six seconds.
All of the cars have since been sold to private owners, some are on display at museums around the world, while others are not able to be seen by the public. Due to the popularity of the film and its prominence in popular culture, many replicas of the car have been produced over the years.
Special versions of the car were built for both the US and UK stage productions of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The UK car is in the Guinness book of records for being the most expensive prop ever made for theatre, costing staggering three-quarters of a million pounds. The car in the stage production is famed for flying out over the audience.
The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 is a car made by the British car firm Aston Martin and designed by Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera. The series was produced to honor the original owner of the company David Brown who died in 1772. The car has become one of the most famous in history for featuring in the James Bond films, first appearing in the film Goldfinger in 1964.
Despite Flemming featuring a different model in the James Bond books, this was the latest model of Aston Martin at the time and so
it was chosen for the film to ensure a contemporary feel. The car which was used for filming was the DB5 prototype, with another model being made for special effect and stunt driving. It has since been named the most famous car in the world has done great things for the Aston Martin brand.
A replica of the car was made to feature in the Bond film Goldfinger in 1995 and this model resides in the film museum in Covent Garden in London. A version of the car which was used in Gold finger and Thunder ball was sold at auction in 2010 for $4.6m.
The next notable period in the car industry was called the vintage era. This lasted from the end of the Second World War in 1918 to the major financial crash of Wall Street at the end of 1929. The most popular type of car in this period was the front engine vehicle.
One of the notable changes which occurred was the covering of cars. At the end of the First World War in 1919, 90% of the cars which were operational had no room. 10 years later, by the end of 1929 /90% of cars were closed. The development of the combustion engine was another crucial development during this period.
Despite the rapid growth which had taken place the expansion of the industry wasn’t quite as prolific as industry experts have predicted. For example, American companies thought that they wo
uld be selling 6 million cars are yellow during the 1920s but, this did not occur in till 1950s. The demand for cars was still high in the vintage era but the economic fallout from the war had left people with little extra money to be spending on what was at the time considered a great luxury.
Despite the slowdown in market growth and huge developments were still made in the technology. For examples, hydraulic brakes were introduced into vehicles by Malcolm Lougheed and were fully operational by the end of 1921.
Notable vehicles which were on the roads on this era included the Austin 7, which proved to be one of the most successful cars of all time and the Ford Model A. This was a huge breakthrough for the Ford company who had, until lagged. In the end, the car proved so popular that they produced over 4 million Model As.
